I disagree with Vincent Carretta's claim that Lovejoy's argument for an African birth is unconvincing simply because to me I think that Lovejoy provides us with more than enough valuable evidence which proves that Carretta's baptismal record and naval record is by no means authentic. With reference to the baptismal certificate, Lovejoy points out convincingly that it was Equiano's god mother who was the one responsible for recording the information appearing on his baptismal certificate so technically Equiano had nothing to do with the recording of the information. Lovejoy also gives various reasons as to why she would have done that and one of the reasons are that she wanted to prove that Equiano was from an mixed European and African background and in Lovejoy's readings he has evidence in which she actually admits to doing this. With reference to the naval record Lovejoy points out that Equinao wanted to impress his new employer Dr Irving. So we should not be ignorant and ignore these valuable evidence provided by Lovejoy.
if attention is being given to lovejoy's evidence then surelly we won't be beating around the bushes, the evidence given by lovejoy against the baptismal certificate and naval record is most clear that Equiano might have had nothing to do with it.so the only evidence that we should be looking at is the evidence that is first hand and which Equiano is involved
One also needs to consider the possible reasons that a piece of paper does not carry ones history of origin and especially not a record of being baptized, possibility could be that Equiano, on his arrival to America he got baptized by his master,
I fully agree with Akhona Mtebele there could be a possibility that it was his master who baptized him and therefore Carretta sees this as an American birth when in actual fact he had an African birth.
